Why did we create this project?

The motivation, design philosophy, and vision behind OpenTosh.

OpenTosh was created out of a desire to build a clean, unified space for the outstanding macOS open-source ecosystem.

For years, the open-source community has built high-quality, high-performance, and privacy-respecting alternatives to popular commercial software. However, discovering these gems is often difficult because they are scattered across GitHub, SourceForge, and private blogs.

The Open-Source Philosophy

Open-source software ensures that you own your data. There are:

  • No trackers: Your data stays on your machine.
  • No subscriptions: Tools are fully free to use.
  • Auditable code: Anyone can verify the security of the application.

Designing OpenTosh

When building OpenTosh, we decided to celebrate macOS's history by structuring the entire application as a dark macOS desktop shell. With a fixed Menu Bar, an interactive magnifying bottom Dock, and a fully blurred Launchpad quick-search overlay, searching for applications feels like looking for them directly inside Finder.

We hope you find this catalog useful. Please share your favorite open-source tools to help keep the registry growing!
